Pressing the button on a camera you capture a moment in time, where the beauty of the picture lies within you, the eye of the beholder.
Stratford, Ontario is a beautiful city with a rustic background dating back to the Victorian Era. Any image will capture the history of the city, however, it is how the individual chooses to perceive the image that reflects their perception on the city's culture.
During it's height in the Victorian Era, one can visualize the bask "glow" of the city, as society thrived and people lived in a Era of piece.
On the other hand, the peace of the Victorian Era came at the price of the Industrial Revolution. The beholder can perceive the city through the chaotic tone of the stagnated society, as mortality rates of the poor increased and child labor was favored over the average working man.
With endless Victorian buildings stretching out down every street, one can articulate a simplistic but artistic perception of the city that honors it's vast and rustic history.
Beyond it's artistic significance, one can view the city through a progressive standpoint. As each year Stratford generously funds in the development and implementation of new technologies throughout Ontario.
This is why the English idiom
"A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words"
exists, as I truly believe that the world is how you choose to perceive it. Life is a gift, so be optimistic and live a little each and every day!

"Logic Will Get You From A to B, Imagination Will Take You Everywhere"
- Albert Einstein
They say imagination is the gate to creativity, I think of it more as a door. A gate is transparent, the iron bars reveal what lies beyond it whereas a door conceals the contents behind it, requiring the individual to enact in order to truly peak their imagination. As a wise man once said, "My name's Rick Harrison ... and you never know what's gonna come through that door."
My University professor once taught me that a prime tactic most innovators utilize is taking two random objects and putting them together, the results being a mark of creativity. As a child, I loved to play the Pokemon games, and never truly grew out of it. One of my biggest dreams was to live in a world inhabited by these pocket monsters.
However, a shift in imagination doesn't always need to start and stop with a singular mixture of common concepts. Take the image above, Magmar is a notorious fire breathing beast able to immolate any object in a pinch. Take this concept of immolation. Immolation is cacophonic term, and the image of it is quite chaotic. Now, imagine taking a peaceful scene and combining it with a chaotic element. The convergence of two opposite ideas may surprise you.

"I'm in love with red. I think it's such a passionate color. Every flag of every country has red in it. It's power, it's pride, and over all, it's the color of life."
- Bryan Batt
Red holds many meanings. It is passion and love, outrage and anger and represents power and strength. How can a color so simple represent such complex motions?
In regards to photography, numerous studies have been conducted that entail red to be the main color that draws the eye's focus. Being a hot color, it is bright, but how does it compete with other colors in that spectrum? I believe that it is it's connotation to life that give red such power in photography. It is after all the color of the body's fuel of life, blood.
Take this simple fire hydrant. It is a bland and stationary entity, motionless, lifeless, static.
However, through altering the image, the vibrant nature of the color red does display how attracting the fire hydrant now becomes to the eye, where among darkness it truly shines.
The goal of this blog is to diverge from manipulating images to entail ludicrous imagination and creativity, and direct it towards empowering entities that are present in our lives that we would otherwise over see on a daily basis.
Signs are everywhere in our lives, directing such critical elements of society that we have come to ignore. The fire route sign guides us in the critical emergency of a fire. Ensuring we can obtain organization in the midst of chaos.
The stop sign. Upright and tall, it guides the flow of traffic through time, and an element that ensures us as a pedestrian or driver respect the rules of the road to remain safe.
Regulatory signs enforce rules of the federation. They ensure we follow safe and healthy habits, such that ourselves and those around us are never under and imminent threat.
But finally, the fire hydrant. Motionless, it lingers by in its day to day life, dormant, sleeping. However, in the state of emergency it truly springs to life, aiding as the greatest tool to sooth raging flames as they vigorously burn out.
Red is truly a powerful color in photography. With just one enhancement, it steals the eye's focus and expressed an empowered emotion that target's the individual's heart.
In my future these elements of colorized contrast can be utilized in my branding assignments, as the intensity of color attracts the eye from the mono chromatic colors of black and white. As a result it will add to the sophistication of my branding design and allow me to direct the viewers focus in a visually pleasing manner, in order to increase the effectiveness of the brand.

“I’ve never had a problem with a dumb client. There is no such thing as a bad client. Part of our job is to do good work and get the client to accept it.”
- Bob Gill
They say that extroverts rule the world while introverts create it. A concept like this can be applied within a business sense, where the CEO of a company must work internally in order to develop an external view for their company. A key aspect of company imaging is its branding, and one of it's most important aspects being the logo. The logo is the external element of a company that represents the image of their product or services. A good graphic designer will create the brand image, however a great graphic designer will take into consideration of the question "how should this logo be designed, such that it frames the desired image of the company?"
One cannot simply create a design, without digressing through multiple trials and error attempts. Whether they be as rough sketches to numerous denials of work by a client. With this in mind, I chose to digress from my comfort zone of image manipulation and hop into a field I am not as comfortable with, being graphic design.
This summer, a popular new application was launched by Niantic that most of us are familiar with by now, Pokemon Go. These little pocket monsters seemed to be easy targets to learn and develop my vector art abilities. Using each of the initial starter Pokemon, I traced a sketch as best as I could and slowly began to colorize them.
From here I decided to explore a little bit, and colorized them to imagine each one of them in different color pallets and environments.

This type of vector art is simplistically made, however this style of art is most favored for branding. Take into consideration of some of the worlds top franchises and companies, such as McDonalds, Nike and even firms such as Google. These companies do not utilize abstract or complex imaging, instead the simplicity of the design brings in a level of sophistication for the viewer to see.
However, I did take it one additional step further this week and decided to utilize my new skills with my field of comfort, photo manipulation.
Utilizing vector art, I was able to take out the key element in two photos and convert them into this simplistic art style. Although they may not be the most visually appealing, it is a step into applying new skills with old merits.
Although it may not look as appealing as the other works, this is solely my initial attempt at utilizing vector art in placement of image manipulation. In the future I plan to incorporate the element of simplicity, coloration and sleek design in order to deliver a higher level of sophistication to my client's brand. As such I conclude this segment with one final note, in branding I believe there are three responses a client can give you when responding to the final product, "no", "yes" and "WOW". It should be every graphic designer's goal to surpass the minimalist requirements and achieve that wow factor for their client, and it does not take complication, as some of the most skilled artists incorporate all the elements of complex imaging into a simplistic design.

The other day in classes we had a graphic design poster due. The generalized ideology was to create a poster that reflected the brand ideologies and philosophy of your "client." For instance my own poster looks like this;
The simplified ideology of my clients business was that he was a nature photography company that specialized in providing an exceptional user experience by working closely along with their clients. Working on my client's natural and creative ideologies, I was able to create a logo (bottom left) and an overall poster that best matched their desires and respected their brand philosophy.
Although this is the final result of my poster, I believe that I have made numerous errors in the final product as well. For instance the logo is quite large and eye drawing, the font choice seems too basic and simplified and the effects enacted upon the quote "Let there be Light" seems elementary.
However, as a part of the project, I was made to critique other works (names will not be shared as to respect the individual rights of all other artists).
Starting on a positive note, these two posters were one of my favorites. On the right I was really impressed with the artistic elements they incorporated into their design. The font manipulation provides a "powerful" feeling to the brand, and the logo is truly unique. I Talked with the creator and was enlightened to know that their logo took over 3 hours to create and conceptualize, which brings light to the amount of dedication and time that graphic designers must put into their work that most people in our society undermine. On the right I enjoyed the cartoon-like aspect they incorporated into their artwork. The creator utilized the "golden spiral" as well as a minimalist coloration and beveled structure in order to create a visually pleasing poster.
On the other hand, there were a few posters that had some elements I was made to criticize.
Starting off with the poster on the right, the usage of coloration is displeasing to the eye, and creates this chaotic tone that takes away from the value of the brand. On the right the image bolsters a chaotic tone as well. The stock image of a wall in the background clashes with the vector chef and brand logo. In addition the font choice creates a childish and resulting unprofessional mood towards the poster, negatively impacting the brand image of being a superior European restaurant.
Overall, through this experience I have been able to gather the knowledge to what it may feel like to be a graphic designer out in the industry. The close work and communications you needed to retain with your clients was critical in create a positive brand logo and poster that satisfied the client's needs while respecting and reflecting their company's image. As a result, this project has taught me numerous critical creative elements and social skills needed in order to succeed as a graphic designer.

"Animation offers a medium of story telling and visual entertainment which can bring pleasure and information to people of all ages everywhere in the world"
- Walt Disney
Individual improvement comes from jumping into an new environment and learning how to adapt. Illustrator and Photoshop are easy to utilize and hard to aster Adobe tools, however they do limit the extent of applicability in terms of my development of graphic knowledge.
In order to expand my knowledge accordingly, I have chosen to try working with 3D rendered animation.
Starting out was a difficult process, as the learning curve for 3D rendering objects is quite an exponential. To take it slow, starting out I wanted to attempt working with a simplistic element of animation, which is rendering an object. In order to learn more tools, I decided to take a household object my family uses to hold fruits and bread and replicate it in Blender.
Here, I take you through the journey of my creation; the bowl in cloth;
(Note that all processes were made solely within Blender 2.78)
I start off simplistic, I need to make a bowl. A sphere does have a simular structure to a bowl, thus I insert a 3D UX wired sphere into the 3D plane.
From here, I cut off the top portion of the wired sphere and flatten out the base (a wired object is hollow inside). Looking at the rim of the bowl, it seems as though it requires more depth.
Depth is added, I round the polygonal surface to give the appearance of a smooth bowl. From the object texturing menu I set the texture to be glass so that the object resembles a glass bowl.
Now I create a platform, It will be used in the render process.
I insert another platform, rotate it 45 degrees on the z-axis and 75 degrees on the x-axis. I am doing this such that when I add a physics effects to the cloth, it will fall into the bowl, creating a natural cloth-like appearance.
Textures are added to the cloth, collision fields are implemented for the bowl, platform and cloth. I let the environment render such that the cloth will "fall" into the bowl. In short, running the environment allows the physic's elements I implemented into all objects to enact in real time.

The end process looks like this, having finished creating my entities, I want to now adjust my lighting and camera source in order to create a dramatic environment for the final render.

Here is where I have chosen to position the final camera and place the light facing the bowl. I am now ready to render the image.

The Final Render

Although it does look elementary, this process took me about 2 hours to complete (including learning the components and tools of Blender, and rendering time). In the future I plan to grow my 3D modeling skills and start working towards training my animation skills such that on Project 2, I will be able to deliver a pristine piece.

"Change is the end result of all true learning"
- Leo Buscaglia
Well, it is the end now isn't it.
In this final mini blog I am going to briefly cover the trials of my final branding animation, in addition to recapping my experiences in the course to this point.
The accumulation of this course came down to our final assignment, which was to create a 30 second miniature animation that honored our client's brand philosophy. The added on bonus was given if you formatted your animation to 1600px by 7200px for display on our campus digital wall.
If you remember from before, my client's company was Dubois, a nature photography company stressing upon natural imagery and strong personal ties with their clients. To begin the animation process, I had to first generate a consensus around what thematic elements, style and story I wanted my animation to pertain to. To do this, I created a couple of mood boards;
A core aspect that can be seen from these images is the central ideology of nature at the forefront. I wanted to create an animation that was simplistic while also impact to my audience that honored the Dubois company name. As a result I started to side towards creating a 2D vector based animation, where natural pieces would be rendered out simplistic but also pertain to the natural imaging the Dubois name bolstered to their name.
Although I do not have screenshots of it, my second step was to generate some story board ideas, where by pen and paper I would take these thematic elements I wanted to express and generated story ideas by animation would take. I created a total of 5 story boards, where the final one I decided upon was an animation that panned over different ecological environments.
Although a simple idea in concept, the application of my ideology was to no avail, much more difficult. I have never been an animator, and why I chose to do an animation for my final project instead of stop motion imaging is beyond me. Although now that I look back I assume what went through my mind was "Now is your time to shine, go big or go home."
My first steps in creating this animation were to generate the background sprites. In total I wanted 5 scenes, resulting in 5 different images.
Although there is some displacement these were how my final backgrounds were to become. The staircase image in the far right is actually a 1600px by 14400px image. This was done since I was intending to animate this image panning up through the mountain, simulating a journey uphill. There is one more background that was no included in here since it was to be entirely animated without a background element. Here is a general image I mocked up when thinking of the scene.
From here I had to animate these environments, whether it be through the implication of sprites or generating motion elements, every scene had it's own unique elements.
Here are some of the sprites, green screens and even images I created throughout the whole process that would later be implemented into motion or the final result. (There was some overlap/reuse of sprites between scenes)
Scene 1: Mountains
Scene 2: Ocean
Scene 3: Desert
Scene 4 and 5: Mountain Staircase/ Top of Mountain
From here, I generated each scene and developed a camera aperture green screen.
Through editing and final animations, I am proud to say that this is my final result.
I can honestly state that overall this project was a major challenge to me. I have always been a student that was exceptionally skilled in mathematics and the sciences, however with arts these skills served very little to no use to me. It was difficult to create this animation since prior to the project I had little digital arts skills and no 2D animation experience. Backtracking through my blogs, I can honestly state that I ended up utilizing everything that I learned throughout this semester into this animation. The final result may not be the most elegant material, however for one I am proud with how I have learned to diverge from my comfort zone often, as it is where the pinnacle of learning begins to any person by diving right into an unknown field.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Summary
This course can be summarized by one phrase; "Trial by Fire."
This is my favorite phrase, as it forces hands on learning through trial and error. Unlike any teacher I have had before, this professor did not teach us in the traditional orthodox way our society has been accustomed to. We had a total of two lectures in class, where the teacher covered the general ideological elements that went into creating a brand image, thereby pertaining his lessons towards the development of our critical thinking skills. Everything after that was self driven, where the professor would assign work in advanced, provide us useful links and even discuss with us one on one.
Now there were mixed feelings about this class to every person I talked to, however I can personally say that I admired his teaching style. I have always been an independent person, and found that there were restraints when teachers adopted the "no child left behind" and "hand holding" rules in their course. These rules are great for the general classroom where the teacher may want all of their students to succeed, however our professor decided on generating a digital artist's environment in his course curriculum. He showed us that the real world does not provide second chances, and how your investment towards a piece of work provided you new tools and reflected your overall skill level as an artist. This type of learning was what I admired, the teacher's aids needed to be sought by students and he was completely honest about the work you presented to him. Honestly is virtue in the digital artists field, what you think about your work may not be what the client may want so you must dilute your ego and work with your clients needs and interests.
Overall, the environment the teacher created throughout this course was essential towards understanding the nature of this field, forcing us to adapt our current knowledge and work towards our own goals instead of the one's he maps out. After all once university is over we will only have ourselves to tend towards, so what we learn now is significant to what we do in the future
For my blogs, this is the end. It has been a very fun and self-fulfilling ride and if I could, I would do it again. From my own perspective I feel as though I have developed as a digital artist from through this course. Before I had next to no digital skills, and I remember spending many long nights at my school library studying methods and the programs in order to succeed in this course. I learned through many trials and errors, and like programming, even the littlest successes can become the most rewarding endeavors. Overall, the experiences I have had these past few months has truly been amazing.
If my teacher is reading this blog, I want to thank you for everything you have done for me. Although we did not talk often, you fostered the growth and skills I would have never even considered to study and partake upon, thereby helping me grow not only as a student, but also as a person. For this I am grateful, thank you for for the failures, thank you for the successes and thank you for the experience, I wish you the best of luck in your future career endeavors and may our paths cross again in the future.
